Air plants, or tillandsia plants, are arguably some of the coolest plants out there and make great houseplants thanks to their low maintenance needs. As the name implies, air plants don’t need soil to grow but rather use their roots to anchor themselves to a host like a tree in the wild or decorative items in your home.

They look gorgeous in glass orb terrariums, on ornamental branches or on top of a little vase like we have them displayed at Blackhawk Hardware’s Garden Center.

Caring for Air Plants

While air plants absorb water through their leaves, a common misconception is that they absorb enough moisture from the air and don’t need watering. Unless you are living in a very humid home you will most likely need to help them out. If you do live in a very humid home let us suggest a dehumidifier for you!

About once a week to every ten days let your tillandsia sit upside down in a plate or bowl with water. Alternatively, some sources suggest misting your air plants with water daily to provide them with ample moisture.

What’s equally as important as water is light. Air plants love bright, filtered light and can also thrive very well under full spectrum artificial light. A popular spot for air plants is near east, south, or west facing windows and they make amazing architectural design elements in hanging glass orbs. A perfect housewarming or secret santa gift for your co-workers and friends!
