Painting An Exterior Door
How do you paint an entrance door? Read through these instructions and gather all material for a smooth project.
- Take your front door off its hinges and place it on two sawhorses.
- Remove all hardware from your door.
- Clean the surface with a wet sponge or rag.
- Lightly sand the door with sandpaper.
- Wipe off any sand dust.
- Tape off any glass panes with painters tape. Use a putty knife to help tearing the tape neatly in the corners.
- Apply primer, remove painting tape and let dry. For dark colors we suggest using a tinted primer.
- Retape and paint the door in the color of your choice.
- Remove any tape and wllow the first coat to dry before repeating the process for the second coat.
Tips:
- It may be easier to do this in two days to allow for drying times and still have a door on the house.
- If you have a storm door, lock that and put a piece of plywood in place of the door overnight.
- We suggest using a paint roller for the door surface and foam brushes for molding but a paint brush will work just fine, too.
