Back in January when we were at market, we started planning an October display of trees and ornaments for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.   Today, the first day of October, I had the honor of decorating the little pink grove of trees.  You can’t miss them as you come in the main store entrance.   Look for a glow of pure pink!

Blackhawk Hardware will give a generous portion of the sale of the ornaments to Carolina Breast Friends .  You may have seen or heard of The Pink House on East Morehead Street.  Their brochure states:  It’s a unique, “one stop shop” and respite center for breast cancer survivors… during any stage of the journey.  Do tell someone who may find their services helpful about CBF.  In a nutshell, these are some of the offerings:

  • * Monthly meetings for survivors
  • * Wellness education classes covering a broad range of relevant topics
  • * Resources in the library and computer research center to aid in finding treatment or medicine options
  • * A healing garden – a beautifully planted sanctuary for relaxation and meditation
  • * A fitness center offering exercise and yoga classes
  • * A nutrition center that hosts meal planning and preparation classes
  • * Self-image services that aid in finding resources for wigs, skin care and prosthetic garments
  • * Workshops that offer a variety of activities from arts and crafts to journal making
  • * Numerous outreach projects
  • * Peer-to-peer mentoring services.

There is so much more, please do read up about CBF and their founder, the late Kristy Adams-Ebel,  whose vision has been filled through a wonderful soft

[pink] place to fall and resources that are available to anyone associated with breast cancer, even offering support for offspring, boyfriends and husbands.  How amazing is that?

When I was talking to CBF’s director, Lisa McDonald, and she was describing some of the myriad of offerings, I recognized that I would have valued those services eighteen years ago when I was dealing with my own sister’s breast cancer struggle and eventual death from way across the Atlantic Ocean.

Please do come to Blackhawk this month to purchase an ornament off the tree.  Your purchase will benefit Carolina Breast Friends and the Pink House.
