• Buy garden chemicals in small quantities that can be used up in one growing season to avoid storage problems.
  • If the label of a garden chemical has faded, write the brand name, active ingredient and EPA registration on the container itself or on masking tape attached to the container.
  • Do not spray pesticides on a windy day; chemicals can drift onto non-targeted areas. Use the lowest pressure possible with your sprayer to minimize drift.
  • Choose a lawn sprinkler with an adjustable pattern to avoid applying water to concrete and asphalt. Water applied there is water wasted. Consider a well-designed, in-ground irrigation system if you can.
  • It is difficult to water lawns to a depth of 4 to 6 inches without runoff. Several short waterings an hour apart work better than a longer, continuous application.
