A mere dusting of paint gives a vintage look
I was in Bali several years ago, and with the array of fabulous handcrafted items to buy, I did a fair amount a lot of shopping . Among my purchases was a pair of hand carved, wooden picture frames that, converted to US currency, were a mere dollar or two. As you’ll see in the pictures, one frame was stained a dark grey, while the other one was natural wood. I brought them all the way home and then never did anything with them. Over time I contemplated using one for a mirror, another for a photo but did nothing and they sat gathering dust.
About the time I was putting my old house on the market, I saw a blog featuring empty frames hanging on the wall as art. I decided that I could use my Bali frames I consulted with Carl in our Paint and Plumbing department who recommended, not to use a brush-on paint, but rather to use a spray paint. He suggested Krylon Satin and I picked Bright White. I set up on the driveway with plastic underneath and far away from anything that might get paint mist on it. I shook the can as instructed and, ready to paint, I lightly sprayed what was going to be my first coat. What I saw, I loved! It was a mere dusting of paint and it gave an ethereal, vintage sort of look. It brought out the carved details more than multiple coats of white would have. As soon as the paint dried, I hung the frames on the wall, and the look was just what I wanted. I wish I had photographed the frames before and also the step-by-step process. However I did take photos of them in the old house, and this is what they looked like there. Now I’m in the new house, and after painting the chalkboard paint on the powder room walls a couple of weeks ago, (see post) I thought the Bali frames would be perfect on one of the grey walls. My daughters suggested hanging them on the chalkboard wall and draw pictures inside. I love-love-loved the idea! Since each has a cat, they drew Arrow and Pixel within the frames. Hint If you’re spray painting a sculpted piece like a lamp or some furniture, or wicker or anything carved – consider lightly spraying your object first to see what the effect is. Perhaps you will also love a mere dusting. Our guys in the Paint and Plumbing Department are super knowledgeable and can guide you with any and all paint purchases.
