First impressions are everything and that is exactly what a pop of color can do for your home’s entrance. Painting a front door is a surprisingly easy project that has a huge impact on your curb appeal. Blackhawk Hardware’s paint department has everything you need to paint your door including free advice from our associates.

Painting An Exterior Door

How do you paint an entrance door? Read through these instructions and gather all material for a smooth project.

  1. Take your front door off its hinges and place it on two sawhorses.
  2. Remove all hardware from your door.
  3. Clean the surface with a wet sponge or rag.
  4. Lightly sand the door with sandpaper.
  5. Wipe off any sand dust.
  6. Tape off any glass panes with painters tape. Use a putty knife to help tearing the tape neatly in the corners.
  7. Apply primer, remove painting tape and let dry. For dark colors we suggest using a tinted primer.
  8. Retape and paint the door in the color of your choice.
  9. Remove any tape and wllow the first coat to dry before repeating the process for the second coat.

Tips:

  • It may be easier to do this in two days to allow for drying times and still have a door on the house.
  • If you have a storm door, lock that and put a piece of plywood in place of the door overnight.
  • We suggest using a paint roller for the door surface and foam brushes for molding but a paint brush will work just fine, too.
